The Hessequa, who pastured their cattle along the south-east Cape coast between the present-day towns of Swellendam and Albertinia - and beyond - long before the arrival of the European colonists .
They're better described as a ‘Khoekhoe community,’ rather than what the early history books pejoratively called. ‘Hottentots.’
It is estimated that there are in excess of 50 sites containing examples of rock art in the Langeberg mountains of Hessequa. Thirty two (32) of the sites have been surveyed and documented by dr. Renée Rust during a project which has been running since 2005.The Hessequa Society for Archaeology is presently funding stage two of this project where dr Rust and her team will survey and document further sites. Some of her work is on display in the Rock Art Gallery of the Blombos Museum of Archaeology.
